91% of people claim they want to do more to reduce their personal plastic waste, but not everyone knows where to start. That's where we step in. Our aim is to encourage people in taking one small step to reduce their waste by switching their plastic toothbrush for a bamboo one.
Swapping out a toothbrush is something anyone can do with ease. The bamboo toothbrushes brush exactly the same, the only difference is the handle. Everyone needs somewhere to start reducing their plastic waste and we believe switching out every day items is the perfect place to start.
Toothbrushes can take over 1000 years to break down meaning they are left in landfill and contaminate oceans. We all use toothbrushes every day(hopefully!) and by switching out plastic toothbrushes for biodegradable ones, we would save a minimum of 4 kilograms of plastic each across our lifetimes.
Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world and can grow up to a meter a day without any fertiliser! This makes it extremely sustainable and eco-friendly. Also, bamboo is naturally antibacterial and is fully biodegradable and compostable meaning no waste is left when they are thrown away since they decompose.
We make our products with Moso bamboo, which is the type of bamboo pandas don't eat. This means you can enjoy our products in peace, with the knowledge that they aren't destroying habitats.
What About The Bristles?
Our bristles are produced by DuPont®, the first major manufacturer of nylon bristles with over 70 years of experience. The bristles are made from nylon-6,10 which retains its properties better when wet due to its low moisture absorption. This is good for keeping your brush hygienic. Nylon bristles are proven to effectively clean teeth and are backed by dentists
Unfortunately, regardless of what other companies say, nylon is not biodegradable. The current fully biodegradable options are ineffective and not suitable for cleaning your teeth. Furthermore, as well as being ineffective, the current biodegradable bristles are made from animal hairs, meaning animals may have been harmed in the making of those products. This is definitely not an option for us.
However, we are working hard on finding a fully biodegradable alternative that can effectively clean your teeth without harming animals. We want to be the first company in the world that develops a 100% biodegradable and fully compostable toothbrush. Watch this space!
We're working hard on getting the right certifications to prove our bamboo is harvested sustainably and in a way that does not harm the environment. It is important for us that we are able to prove we are harvesting our bamboo sustainably and although it is a lengthy process, we will get it done.
How do I dispose of the bamboo brush properly?
For proper disposal, please remove the bristles. The bristles are very small and lightweight and so are not accepted for recycling in most countries. Each country has different recycling options so be sure to check with your local authority.
You can remove the bristles in one of two ways:
1. Simply pull out the bristles with some pliers (you can run the bristles under hot/boiling water to make them come out easier).
2. Snap off the toothbrush head completely.
Once the bristles are removed, the handle can be put in your home compost or in a commercial composting bin. You can even throw it away into your garden!
There are many ways you can re-purpose your toothbrush before you throw it away so get creative and send in your photos!
